Drums in the dark
One salty evening on Pirate Island, the crew heard a sound that made every parrot stop mid-squawk.
Boom. Boom-boom. BOOM.
Drums. Coming from Skull Cave. And nobody was supposed to be in Skull Cave.
The Captain calls the crew
The Captain gathered the whole crew on the beach. “Something is drumming in our cave,” she said. “We sail at moonrise. Bring your bravest faces.”
Every pirate put on their bravest face. Some faces were braver than others.
Into the cave
The crew tiptoed into Skull Cave, hearts thump-thumping louder than the drums.
They raised their lanterns high, ready for anything. A sea monster! A rival crew! A grumpy ghost!
What they found was... much stranger.
The terrible drummers
It was crabs. A whole family of crabs, tapping on coconut shells, having the best party.
Tap. Tap-tap. TAP.
The scariest sound on Pirate Island was a crab band practice.
A different kind of battle
The Captain lowered her lantern. “Well,” she said. “We came ready for a battle.”
So they battled. They battled to see who could dance the silliest. They battled to see who could tap the funniest rhythm. The crabs won every round, and nobody minded one bit.
The coconut treaty
That night the pirates and the crabs signed the Coconut Treaty: every full moon, one big party in Skull Cave. Pirates bring the snacks, crabs bring the drums.
It is still the law on Pirate Island. Check the cave wall. It is written in coconut.
The bravest battles
And so the crew learned the secret every great pirate knows:
The bravest battles are the ones you don't fight.
Now go be kind to somebody. That is the real treasure.
