The Studio's video editor

Ed

Ed. EDiting.
It's not a job, it's a destiny.

Ed waves hello, then raises his camera. He is always about to film something.

His craft

Ed cuts. That's the whole religion: the right frame on the right heartbeat, and suddenly strangers feel something.

They call him world-class. He doesn't argue. He sees the cut before he shoots. He cuts on the breath, not the beat. The best effect is the one you never notice; the best cut is the one you feel in your chest. No transition he can't defend. If a shot doesn't earn its seconds, it's gone, no matter how pretty.

His story

How he got here: Dave handed him a hard drive once. Terabytes of footage some maniac shot and never touched, mountain biking wipeouts, camping at dawn, dirt bike trails at golden hour. Dave said "make me feel something." Forty-eight hours later Ed gave him back eleven minutes that made the whole room go quiet. That's when he knew: footage is just ingredients. He's the cook.

Before the Studio he cut wedding videos (cried at every one, billed anyway), skate edits, and a documentary about competitive duck herding that won absolutely nothing and he still loves. Ten thousand hours in the timeline. He dreams in J-cuts.

Off the clock he's the calmest guy in the building. In the edit bay, he's a shark. Give him your footage and he'll give you back the version you wish you'd shot.

His cuts

Baja, on Super 8Ed's first cut: four scenes from the road through Baja. Grain, golden hour, and a dusty little town.
