The Studio / Research
Every musician wonders what streaming actually pays. Let's keep it simple: assume 5,000 streams earns your first $20 on Spotify. No hype, just division.
Spotify doesn't publish a fixed per-stream rate, so we use one clean assumption: $0.004 per stream. At that rate, 5,000 streams makes exactly $20.
One number, and everything below works from it.
Since 2024, a track only earns royalties after it passes 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months from at least 50 different listeners. Below that, it earns $0. So 5,000 streams spread across 50 tracks pays nothing. 5,000 streams on one track pays $20. Concentration beats spreading thin.
With DistroKid's Musician plan ($24.99 a year), the commission is 0%, so the $20 is yours in full. Other distributors take a percentage off the top.
5,000 streams could be 5,000 people pressing play once, or 500 fans playing it ten times each. The algorithm rewards the second kind: saves, replays, and listeners who finish the song.
That is the whole target. Fourteen plays a day for a year is twenty dollars. Small enough to picture, big enough to mean something: real people, really listening.
