From Cattle Farm
to Silicon Valley.

I grew up on a cattle farm in the middle of nowhere, where the nearest movie theater was an hour and a half away. Computers changed everything: at 15, before I could even drive, I set up my first startup and built my first web design agency. That road led through New York City, a book-reselling business, and Denim Blog, the largest jeans website on the internet, reaching 25 million people, all the way to The Studio, where technology, entrepreneurship, music, storytelling, and community come together.

Starting far away

Life on the cattle farm was rural and quiet. The larger world often felt distant, but computers opened a door. I loved learning how they worked, and even more, I loved the world they made reachable. Technology gave me a way to explore, communicate, and create without waiting for opportunity to find me.

Learning to build

When I was about 15, before I could drive, I set up my first startup and built my first web design agency. It taught me that if I could make something useful, I could create value from almost anywhere. After my teenage years, I moved to New York City. It was a big change from being on the farm, and that was when I really began trying to level up.

In college, I started a book-reselling business. During my final year, I created an entrepreneurship community where people could share ideas and learn from one another. That community became HonestForum, which evolved into Denim Blog, the largest jeans website on the internet, reaching 25 million people.

A wider world

I worked in India for six months, and in Bolivia for six months at an orphanage. Those experiences changed me a lot. I saw people who had gone through so much suffering, and it broadened the way I thought about creativity, business, and community.

After years of building Denim Blog, I sold the company and began consulting. I helped other people and organizations think through ideas, businesses, and challenges, while asking myself what I wanted to build next.

Bringing it all together

The answer became The Studio. It brings together the parts of my life that once seemed separate: technology, entrepreneurship, music, storytelling, experimentation, and community. Dlaney is the first artist and creative voice inside it, but the goal is an open studio with room for many artists, characters, collaborators, and ideas.

I want to make good music, share what we learn, and create work that helps someone else begin. If a song moves someone, if the research saves someone time, or if an honest look at the process encourages another person, then the work has value. That is my story so far, and it is still only the beginning.

We're building the friendliest record company on earth.

It's an open source home for music, stories, and big ideas, bringing artists, characters, researchers, and makers together. We really do care about musicians. We want to help them succeed, and artists keep 100% of their royalties. We create in public, learn as we go, and share the work so more people can build with us.

We are writing a musical!

One of the first projects we're creating at The Studio is Short Bus, an original musical. We're building its characters, story, and songs together, one scene at a time, and sharing the journey as it grows.

Read more about Short Bus

Short Bus is an original musical we are writing at The Studio. Five teenagers, one little yellow short bus, and five days at Pine Lake Camp. On the first morning, the charter bus breaks down, the only ride left is the short bus, and five kids who would rather be anywhere else climb aboard mortified, heads down, pretending they are somewhere else.

The kids are Sally, sixteen, who lost her dad and stopped trusting her own voice. Marty, fifteen, who hides real pain and anxiety behind jokes. Dinesh, sixteen, who films everything with his camera because joining people is harder. The quiet kid, grieving his mom, who barely speaks at all. And Echo, the shy camper, who wears white headphones from the moment he boards and takes them off for almost no one. Midweek, a scruffy stray wanders out of the woods, Marty names him Biscuit, and he decides he is one of them.

Waiting at camp with a guitar and a grin way too big for the morning is Chadwick Blaze, a youth pastor whose shirt says Believe. His aggressively cheery welcome songs give the five kids the one thing they can bond over: making fun of camp. But slowly, music stops being something happening to them and becomes how they start revealing themselves.

The turning points come one by one. Marty sings her private song in the dark after lights-out, and Dinesh, who accidentally recorded it, chooses to delete the recording. Sally hides out in the kitchen and falls into a gospel trio with Haddie and Gloria, two cooks whose harmonies help her find her voice again. The quiet kid borrows the old guitar off the rec-room wall and plays the song his mother loved. And Echo, the shyest of them all, finally takes off his headphones.

On dance night, even Dinesh puts his camera down and joins the crowd. Then, with home approaching, Marty slips away to the lake and spirals into a panic attack. Chadwick drops the goofy camp-leader act, sits beside her, and simply breathes with her through the next five minutes. Marty walks back and sings the song she once whispered in the dark at full volume, with her new friends joining in.

On the final morning, the same little bus that embarrassed them five days earlier has become their bus. Nobody hides. Nobody sits alone. Years later, Sally is a singer in New York City, and her four oldest friends are in the audience as she sings the song that started as a whisper in a cabin full of strangers. Nothing in their lives was magically fixed. But none of them is carrying it alone anymore. That is the heart of Short Bus: songs and stories for kids and adults who have been through a lot. If one kid feels less alone, it worked.

Our Mission

The Studio's mission is to spread goodness.

We put out great videos, songs, content, and stories. Everything we do is focused on goodness. We experiment, see what works and what does not, and keep putting good things into the world.

We strive to be the friendliest record company on earth. That means putting artists first: musicians who work with us keep 100% of their royalties. We are exploring simple, flat-fee models where we handle the marketing and the artist keeps everything their music earns.
